Gascón claimed in her interview with CNN that the social media post was fake and created in an attempt to damage her Oscar campaign following her nomination as thefirst openly transgender actressfor best actress.
“[People] have dedicated themselves to searching, to put together all the things that I had said at a time that I had written — most of which are false … most of them I don’t even recognize that I wrote them,” she said. “And they put them all together and so it seems that she is a very bad person and we remove her just when we can do the most damage, right in the voting period.”
She said onVariety’sAwards Circuitpodcast, “I’m sad … that is the sentiment that has been living in my chest since everything happened. I’m also disappointed. I can’t speak for other people’s actions. All I can attest to is my experience, and never in a million years did I ever believe that we would be here.”
