Fromplaying cricket, taking to thevolleyball courtand evenstepping out post-birth,Kate Middletoncan master anything in heels.
But even she admits that it’s nice to have her feet firmly planted on the ground every now and then.
During herouting with the Scouts at their headquartersat Gilwell Park outside of London on Thursday, the royal mom of three dressed down for the event in a khaki Barbour jacket, a red J.Crew sweater, black skinny jeans and her favorite brown Chloe boots.
And the leather-trimmed suede ankle boots proved to be the proper footwear for the afternoon of activities. As she planted a sapling oak to make the 100th anniversary of the park, she joked: “Normally I have to do this in high heels, this is much easier!”

Earlier in the visit, she joined a group of young Scouts in building model boats and floating them in paddling pools. She evenjoined them in a den built from sticks and leaves.

Maya Rahman, 8, and Sayena Aktar, 7, proudly showed off the den to Kate. “Wow, did you build this? It’s a very good den, I’m very impressed,” she said. “How long did it take you to build? A whole day? Have any of you ever spent the night outside, with the animals and owls? That might be fun.”
She also joined them on an “alphabet adventure” hunt. Rani Dadwal, 4, presented Kate with the letter C.
“Is this a curly C for me? Thank you,” she said, before another girl presented her with a K, saying “K for Kate.” The royal laughed, saying: “I know, it’s very confusing, because I’m Catherine with a C.”
Kate is a longtime supporter of the Scouts. In addition to being a Brownie when she was a kid, she was also a Scouts volunteer when she andPrince Williamlived on the island of Anglesey in north Wales during the first couple years of their marriage.
“She’s used her experience as a sailor to help them with knotting,” a local Scouts source told PEOPLE at the time. “She’s been involved in managing games and joining in art and crafts activities. … We also pitched tents indoors in one of the sessions, and she remembered pitching tents.”
She also became a patron of the organization in 2012, helping to raise volunteer numbers.
