The female child ’s family sought medical intervention locally , which involved disinfecting her hired hand and giving her a line of antibiotics mean to protect against Salmonella bacteria — bug commonly carried by reptiles . regrettably , the Iguana iguana had in reality give her something else . The family returned home , but a blow on the little girl ’s bite mitt refused to go away and only maturate bigger and more painful over time . M. marinum is a relative of the bacteria responsible for human disease like tuberculosis and Hansen’s disease . It ’s recognize to regularly make fish sick and to sometimes cause pelt infections in citizenry . But premature human cases have all been linked to swimming or exposure to infected Pisces . The daughter , as it turned out , is the first somebody to have ever caught it via iguana bite , at least as far as scientist know .
This story of grievous bar theft and bodily damage has a happy ending , at least . Once the miss was dictate combination antibiotic therapy , her symptom and infection cleared up . And the case provides an important reminder that there are many potentially unsafe germ lurking in unexpected spot .
