That sound conversant ! And it ’s relevant to Siri ’s petty pettifoggery this week because Siri is really just a search engine — and a form of dumpy one at that .
Well , that ’s not totally fair . Siri has a lot going on . She ’s complicated . Siri ’s biggest feature of speech is natural speech rendering , and she ’s as good at that as anything else we ’ve got . There ’s a good deal of leg body of work getting all of the homophone and syntax and synonym and judgment of conviction diagram lined up to where you’re able to talk to a cluster of number and have an almost - person speak back to you .
But ! There ’s still more work in take that interpretation of human conversation and catch an exact and useful search result out of it . It ’s a messiness of tenses and definitions and descriptions that , frankly , almost no one but Google gets right , and the “ find oneself me a hooker ” Easter Eggs only raise the level of expectation further beyond what Siri ’s basic substructure can satisfy . Apple did n’t seem to realize this , or at least did n’t do on it efficaciously , so now it ’s getting banged on because its nascent search engine ca n’t connect the word “ miscarriage ” to a medical center that does n’t expend that Holy Writ in its verbal description . That ’s Search 101 , blighter .
Google and Apple ’s Siri are the only two search religious service to go through these mini - scandals because they ’re the only two who have done it on so public a microscope stage with so very in high spirits expectations . Siri ’s already got the Apple sheen , so milled that we expect the same quality that we get from so many other facets of Apple . But it ’s not there . Sure , it ’s a tall order attempt to learn and integrate search , location service , and the whole of human interaction on the fly ball . But it ’s Apple ’s own shift for thinking it could lock down lookup as an second thought .
