For generation , the book serial publication Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark has haunt kids and adults alike . On name recognition alone , the Alvin Schwartz serial publication seems like a consummate choice for a film adaption . And yet , it ’s not just one news report , it ’s lots of narration , which made that processmore than a little difficult . io9 had a chance to speak with manufacturer Guillermo del Toro and manager André Øvredal about it .
“ The beauty about the book is that each story is ego - contained , but that ’s the nightmare of adaptingit and hold it into a picture show , ” theOscar winnertold a group of journalists in Hollywood on Thursday . Del Toro has loved the series since he was a child , have some of the horrifying original nontextual matter by Stephen Gammell , andwas the driving force behind the approaching motion-picture show , which opens August 9 .
“ I had to occur up with a concept that encompassed that theme , ” he keep on . “ We tried to find a menses of time in which tale regard everyone . Who we were as man . What the U.S. was a country at that moment . Andwe set forth to very carefully lay downthe pieces to make it thematically relevant to the story we were telling . ”

Del Toro , along with film writer Dan and Kevin Hageman , finally came up witha fib put in 1968 about a group of kid in a rural town who happen on a deep ledger that writes itself . Characters were formulate to be in “ harmony ” with certain narrative , grant to del Toro , so that everything meshed together into one cohesive plastic film — a motion picture that just so happens to contain multiple Scary Stories .
The question then becomes , plainly , which stories ?
Del Toro order the film works in about five or six of the “ with child hit , ” such as The Red Spot ( patently ) , Harold , The Big Toe , and The Dream , to name a few .

“ We did American Idol with the storiesin the writer ’s room , ” del Toro enounce . “ We distilled it to about five or six that we liked the most . Some of them are told in their totality . Some others are reference . Those that know the books will see more than people that have n’t read the book because some of them are there in name , or fused one with another or with a song or a rhyme . But we basically distilled it to the I that everybody seems to call up the most . The Quran obviously have many , many more story so this could go on or not but we ’ve say ‘ allow ’s do the Greatest Hits . ’ ”
Del Toro , however , is not take the moving picture . For that line , he hire André Øvredal , who directed Troll Hunter and The Autopsy of Jane Doe and was n’t familiar with the series when del Toro transmit him the screenplay .
“ I never find out of them because in Norway they were never relinquish , ” Øvredal allege . “ I come down in love life with the screenplay … which was just this kind of Amblin - esque shivery movie prepare in a flow that was so exciting . It was a unique opportunity to make both a fascinating image of America in the ‘ sixty as well as a really marvellous story about these characters … with amazing monstrosity based on a property and a book serial that was so darling in North America , peculiarly . It was such a wonderful challenge as a theatre director , as well , to make a movie that survive up to the expectations to both , apparently [ del Toro ] , but also the entire community of people who grew up with these books . ”

The other path the photographic film is dwell up to the expectations of both del Toro and book rooter is a heavy focus on practical effect to convey the horrors that have previously only been seen in Stephen Gammell ’s iconic drawings to lifespan . That ’s surely not a surprisal to anyone familiar with del Toro ’s piece of work , but how he went about it may be .
“ For me , sculptors are like actors . You cast it , ” del Toro say . “ So I wanted [ sculptors ] who could be the precise look on the carving [ of ] the house painting … So we used several of the best wight guy rope in the business to render each of the drawings and bring them to life . ”
That may fathom unsubdivided — but , as del Toro direct out , there was just something special about Gammell ’s drawings that made the process unmanageable .

“ You miss a little bit of the benign , ” del Toro said , utter about work up the Pale Lady from The Dream in fussy . “ What is really scary is how peaceful that eccentric seem . How well-chosen and , at the same time , there ’s something empty in the eyes . So when you sculpt to that degree , you ’re sculpting character . It ’s not about a creature that has wings and tooth , it ’s personality . It was extremely hard . ”
Will all of the intemperate work — not just in adapting the book , but in crafting the creatures and more — compensate off ? Audiences will find out August 9 when Scary Stories to recite in The Dark hits theaters .
