Twenty different agency — from ICE and the FBI to the Department of Veterans Affairs and IRS — were encounter using facial acknowledgment , according to the report card . Of the group , seventeen of the agencies at least partially bank on tech from a private company , like Vigilant Solutions orClearview AI . “ 13 federal agency do not have awareness of what non - Union systems with facial acknowledgment technology are used by employees , ” the report reads . “ These bureau have therefore not amply measure the possible peril of using these systems , such as risks related to privacy and truth . ”

“ When we call for information from one of the bureau about its use of non - federal system , agency officials enjoin us they had to poll field partitioning personnel because the information was not hold by the federal agency , ” the GAO ’s report continue . “ Officials from another agency initially tell us that its employees did not use non - Union systems ; however , after conducting a poll , the government agency watch that its employees had used a non - federal system to convey more than 1,000 facial identification searches . ”
But regardless of use , the GAO said , every agency needs more oversight . At the very least , they should know what kind of technical school they ’re using , and who ’s providing it — not only to holdcops accountablewhen these scheme go wrong but to hold the technical school companies behind the tech accountable , as well .
