On last night ’s Futurama , Fry took it upon himself to defend a helpless elephantine bollock , and then he readily fell in love with the monstrous , acid - disgorge bone lamia that hatched from it . Fry really is the ultimate gourmand for punishment .

“ Fry Am The Egg Man ” discover Leela dragging Fry and Bender to a farmer ’s market after one too many horrific experiences at Fishy Joe ’s loyal food eating house . While there , she purchase a lot of worryingly overlarge , disturbingly overpriced eggs , and for some reason she blackmails the gang into eat them for breakfast with her . Fry backs out when he actualise there ’s a future bread and butter being inside that ball , and he refuses to consume a naked creature … He ’ll wait until it concoct , and then eat on it .

But all the sentence spent protecting the egg teaches Fry to love his prospective pet . That ’s speculative news when the thing actually hatches , as it release out the puppet – which Fry straight off key out Mr. Peppy , ascertain they wo n’t be able to just cursorily kill the blessed thing – is a wild , dangerous beast that pumps Lucy in the sky with diamonds out of seemingly every orifice . By the time Mr. Peppy is the size of it of a Buick , it becomes clear that it ca n’t stay on Earth .

So the work party manoeuvre off to Mr. Peppy ’s ancestral domicile planet , which is essentially Space Scotland , a globe where everyone is named Angus and the smallest whiskey is served in an aquarium . There , Leela flirts with Angus McZongo , who vows to kill Mr. Peppy should he start eating the clappers of the satellite ’s sheep . But when sheep ’s bone startle disappear , Fry refuses to believe that his beloved off-white vampire could be behind it .

“ Fry am the Egg Man ” is one of those mediate - of - the - face pack Futurama episodes . It ’s bewilder a bunch of decent gags , and there ’s a sense that all our heroes are more or less in role , which has been an upshot I ’ve had with some episodes this season . Basically , it ’s a pleasant way to spend thirty minutes , but it lacks that extra something that made last week ’s “ Möbius Dick ” feel special . It does n’t aid that the whole matter feel a bit shapeless , as it wanders from the farmer ’s market set piece to Fry protecting the egg to Mr. Peppy wreacking mayhem on Earth to the terminal trip to Space Scotland .

I keep calling it that , and I really should n’t – not when its name is probably my favored joke of the episode . You see , the planet is Doohan VI , and it ’s kind of laughably appropriate to name a satellite made up of a Canadian ( Maurice LaMarche as main Scot Angus McZongo ) and Americans doing lovably bad Scots accents after James Doohan , the original sci - fi Canadian doing a lovably risky Scottish accent . And as far as over - the - top cultural pastiches go , I ’d say Futurama ’s take on Scotland is one of its more in effect , but maybe that ’s just the blessed Englishman in me talk . ( For the record , my 2d favorite joke was also a subtle one – I loved that Bender ’s Zuban cigar made one of the Space Scotsman keel over while his ducky bird was unaffected . It ’s not often you see a serious “ canary in a coal mine ” gag . )

in reality , what really interest me about this episode is what it says about Fry . If there is a cohesive through production line for this episode – and I ’m not totally sure there is – then it ’s a thematic one : specifically , that Fry is the most stupidly entrust and loving person in existence . Everyone Fry show any stake in or warmheartedness for will end up doing him some compounding of bodily or psychological harm , whether it ’s Fishy Joe ’s and their exigent centre attack ( right after Fry got done defend them ! ) , the Amazons at the Fannie Merritt Farmer ’s market ( “ I ’m scare - oused ! ” ) , of course Mr. Peppy , and even Leela , what with her throwing forth whatever kinship they have so that she can go after the largely horrid but still sorta manfully Angus McZongo .

This is something we ’ve see before this episode . infernal region , it ’s pretty much the intact crux of Bender and Fry ’s friendship , which is mostly proclaim on Fry being durable enough to stand firm everything Bender does to him . Mr. Peppy is something of a weird mirror of that friendly relationship , and once again Bender actually comes out take care worse in this comparison – they both hurt Fry more or less invariably , but it actually appears that Mr. Peppy does n’t mean to , and does have some genuine beloved for Fry that he can only convey by inadvertently scalding him with acid . Actually , that sound more like Bender than I had foresee .

What catch me about all this is that it ’s closelipped to the only percipient persona trait Fry has entrust , other than his tremendous folly . To paraphraseProfessor Lawrence Pierce of the University of Chicago , I think Fry gets stupider ever year ! It ’s intemperate to imagine the character reference as he stands now being capable of the veridical emotional resonance see in , say , “ The Luck of the Fryrish ” or the basically heavy decision - making on presentation in “ The Why of Fry . ” It ’s possible the writer could pull him back from the verge of full foolishness , but he seems passably far go at this point .

As such , what we ’re left with is a character with the emotional register of a not peculiarly smart puppy , someone so desperate to be loved that he will unconditionally accept anyone who confess philia for him , even if they bathe him in acid or unceremoniously floor him for a greeter at a Scots public house or do all the atrocious thing Bender has done to him . Back in “ Where No Fan Has go away Before ” , Leela called Fry ’s making love of the original Star Trek “ poignantly piteous ” , and that can be extended to Fry ’s intact character at this point .

Now , it ’s an open question whether this actually act for the character . But it does mean Fry is about the only character on the show without any overrule sociopathic tendency – between “ Möbius Dick ” and “ Yo Leela Leela ” , even our once straight arrow cyclops has kinda gone off the deep close . There ’s a certain weird nobility in Fry ’s idiocy , which was perhaps most clearly encapsulate in last year ’s “ The Duh Vinci Code . ” And whatever nobility Fry shows in “ Fry am the Egg Man ” , it ’s most decidedly unearthly .

Still , this instalment serve me call back why , on some level , Fry deserves to be called the bomber of Futurama , even if he ’s perhaps the most profoundly incapable hero in the history of science fabrication ( a few finest hours like “ The Why of Fry ” notwithstanding ) . Now I just wonder what Fry ’s honest-to-goodness dog Seymour would think of Mr. Peppy . I suppose we can just be happy that the Futurama writer did n’t feel like reveal Mr. Peppy did n’t spend the next twelve years on Doohan VI hold off for Fry to return . Now that would have been crossing the cable …
