DSi XL Review: It’s Probably Not For You

If you already own a DSi , the DSi XL is probably not for you . That ’s not to say it ’s not for anyone ; it ’s the same gadget as the DSi , just bigger . And that ’s it : it ’s for the great unwashed who desire big .

I do n’t desire to expend too much time guessing as to what demographic would prefer a larger screen that has the same size of it resolution — which just makes for expectant picture element and NOT a sharp simulacrum . So real quickly : people with impaired vision , slenderly older folks , people with problem with center strain , people with heavy hands and masses who do n’t expend their DSi outside of their homes . All these mass would benefit from a larger screen — which is essentially the only difference , because it plays exactly the same games as the DSi .

The screen

As state , the XL ’s screenland is just bigger than the DSi ’s screen . It ’s not noticeably better or brighter . It might be a tiny piece blank than the DSi we have , but we ’re not indisputable if that ’s just due to years , or that the color is just ever - so - slightly more bloodless . In any case , it ’s trifling .

Each individual pixel in the 256×192 panel is just bigger . much verbalize , it pee-pee everything a bit hazier and a bit blurrier , but the CRT screen is bombastic , though not so large that it actually makes a difference in gameplay . Your eye just needs to move slightly further when you have to see from one place to another .

The build

Because of its larger bulk , the DSi XL finger more solid than the DSi or the DS Lite . Instead of an all - around matte finish , the top is a glossy , fingerprint - attract smooth surface , whereas the bottom is a more grippy matte affair . Other than this , almost all the buttons , switches and charge port are precisely the same as the DSi . But instead of just having two slits for the right and leave loudspeaker , there are actually 7 pickle on each that give the portable console a much less punk sound . I would n’t say that it ’s great , but it is respectable . And surprisingly enough

Portability

Unless you insist on carry around your D in your air hole at all times , the DSi XL is n’t rottenly bigger than its harbinger . It ’s still a portable twist that you may easily pull in and out when you want to encounter . And yes , it still does suit into pocket , if pant are where you require to store it .

How it feels

Other than being heavier and the screen being tumid , there ’s not a whole circumstances of divergence between the XL and the DSi . The push are in the same places ( not spaced further apart or anything ) , and the five hundred pad is still the five hundred inkpad . No eruditeness curve necessary .

So what’s the deal?

Like we said , this DSi XL is probably not for you , especially if you already own a DSi . It might be for your parents , who you showed Brain Training to a few years ago but they put down after a few minutes because they could n’t focus for retentive point of time on such a small screen . Or , it could be with someone with vision problem for medical reason , who really wanted a portable console table but needed something with more show .

This is one of those throw - away iterations of the handheld ( like the Game Boy Advance SP ) that Nintendo lay out every few days as a “ new point ” between real new item . It ’s witching as a sort of novelty production , but if Nintendo really wants this to cater to the older crowd , we ’re not sure they go far enough . The button are the same sizing , and the style is n’t much bigger either . So as far as the user interface goes , there ’s no adaptation to the needs people who were n’t quite capable of using the old DSi .

But hey , if you ’re brand raw to the DS ecosystem ( where ’ve you been ? ) , maybe you should view the DSi XL rather of just the DSi . It ’s only about $ 20 more than a standard DSi , and if you do n’t mind the additional weight unit , the experience is exactly the same . [ Amazon ]
