The idea of a ‘ place lift ’ has been around since the late 1800s . Until now , there was n’t a material strong enough to build it . Then C nanotubes ill-use in .
It ’s official : everyone in the future will be made entirely out of carbon paper carbon nanotube . They may be able to heal Cancer the Crab , they may be capable to rewire our brain , they may be able to make synthetic skin . Basically , they may be able to supersede an integral person . But once we ’ve made all of these Carbon Nanotubians , what will they do all day ?
The answer has come at last : they ’ll take an elevator into space . One that ’s also made of carbon paper nanotubes . That lift has been a gleam in an engineer ’s center for over a hundred years , and now , thanks to carbon nanotubes , it has become , at the very least , a geomorphologic possibility . Until now , there was n’t a textile strong enough to keep from burst under its own weight if it were ramp up tall enough to touch up into space .

Carbon nanotubes , bantam hollow thermionic valve made of interlocked carbon molecules , are tough enough to meet the challenge . If they were woven together , a single strand the breadth of a thread could corroborate a car . A large enough stoppage of carbon nanotubles could form a ‘ thread ’ 22,000 miles long . The thread would be keep open tight by Earth ’s gravity on one side and the motor acceleration of a Nasa fueling place / touristy snack barroom and memento stand on the other . Between them an elevator would grovel up the length of the carbon nanotube train of thought , hold supplies and passenger .
Nasa has 3 million dollars worth of faith in the estimate , which yield the late budget cuts has to mean a lot . Three million dollar of exploratory and scale model money is n’t go to get this done , though . Give this to Abu Dhabi . They ’ll have a space elevator ping out by the end of 2011 .
