An international squad of astronomers has discovered the farthermost cluster of galaxies yet , located 11.1 billion light - yr from Earth . This is a momentous discovery , as it places the formation of this cluster just 700 million eld after the Big Bang . In fact , we might be find the birth of the cluster itself .

The galax cluster is call CL J1001 + 0220 ( CL J1001 for short ) , and it was get word by an outside group of scientist led by Tao Wang of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission ( CEA ) .

" This galaxy cluster is n’t just singular for its aloofness , it ’s also going through an amazing increase jet unlike any we ’ve ever see , " said Wang in astatement

CL J1001 has 11 monolithic galaxies at its nitty-gritty , nine of which are going through a starburst phase where they are producing a huge amount of new lead . The core of the cluster has a whizz formation pace of 3,000 Sun - like stars per year , which is improbably high even for a very young cluster like this one .

" It appears that we have captured this galaxy cluster at a critical stage just as it has shifted from a loose collection of galaxies into a young , but in full formed galax cluster , " tell co - source David Elbaz , also from the CEA .

Studying this cluster , uranologist were able to derive an insight into the differences between how galax evolve in and outside clustering in the former creation . oval-shaped galaxies seem to be take shape a lot more stars when they are inside clusters than when they are outside .

According to   the paper , published inThe Astrophysical Journal , the squad also discovered that the galaxies seem to mould more stars after they join the cluster rather than before , indicating that the fundamental interaction with other galaxies play a all important role in create adept .

CL J1001 also seems to have a mountain more star than the models and simulation were expecting , signal that either galaxy clusters form more quickly than previously thought , or such clusters are very rare and they are not common in our estimator simulations .

" We think we ’re going to see a lot about the formation of cluster and the galaxies they contain by studying this object , " said Centennial State - author Alexis Finoguenov of the University of Helsinki in Finland , " and we ’re go to be search severely for other examples . "
