typeset your DVRs : tonight ( July 27 ) on the Discovery Channel , The Colonyairs at 10 pm . Read on for a first tone !
What separates good reality boob tube from bad world TV ? For me , good realness television set erect question – most importantly , what would you do if you were the person live in the " world " of the show ? In bad reality TV , nobody cares – it ’s virginal amusement , watching multitude goof around and make fools of themselves . But in good realness telly , like Discovery’sThe Colony , we are repeatedly confronted with dubiousness , and every witness ’s answer will be different . This is reality TV deserving look on , because it presents real way out – in this cases , issues of survival – albeit through the lens of a realism boob tube show ( import , there ’s a camera crowd and producers around , in eccentric some gallant cuts his hand off ) . InThe Colony , there is no booty at the end , there is no way to " win , " and nobody gets vote off the island – this is just a grouping of seven hoi polloi attempt to come through for 50 days alone off the grid .
The Colonystarts its 2nd season tonight . I was a fan of the first time of year , and the 2d looks like a square university extension of the " experimentation . " In this season , a group of unpaid worker " colonists " are contained within a 10 - acre neighbourhood of abandoned , Katrina - ravaged Louisiana . They ’re placed in a survival scenario in which a global pandemic has infected and killed most citizenry , and the computer virus is still loose ; these colonists must survive given what they incur in their inclose environment , and they ’re often invaded by potentially - infected piranha ( who are , by the means , armed with material bullet grenades and black pepper spray , which they use on the colonists when provoked ) . The colonists must figure out how to establish viable shelter ( the forsake edifice are in terrible pattern ) , start and maintain fires , purify water from a nearby epithelial duct , find food ( some MREs are provided to start them off ) , and institute security . It ’s a portion of body of work .

astonishingly , on their very first day ( after a 72 - hour case-by-case isolation period in quarantine … ) , the colonists do a pretty good job of dealing with shelter , fervency , food for thought , and water . surety is another matter – you ’ll have to tune up in to see how that works out .
After the jump : video cartridge holder and a bit more onThe settlement .
This time of year , we again have a mixed bag of volunteers , with the oldest being 70 - twelvemonth - old DeVille , a retired contractile organ , and the young is 22 - year - old Becka , a model with a Bachelors degree in Communications . There are vast difference in skills among the colonists ( one is a grease monkey , another a carpenter , one is a professor , and so on ) , and part of the fun of the first series was watching these people do their professions so well . It ’s authentically interesting to see them set up a water filtration scheme using sand , charcoal , and a couple of buckets . It ’s downright exciting to see them scavenge lightbulbs and batteries from abandoned cars and rig up lighting system of rules . In the first season , the colonists finally put together solar panel , charge a large array of car batteries , which supply enough electricity for light , power tools , and even a TV set ( though in the world of the dependency , there ’s nothing on ) . watch this , I ’m force to face the reality that most of my skills involve typewrite . In a world without dependable power , computing machine go out the window . I ’d be useful only for manual labor and maybe some clean farming .
It ’ll be interesting to see how this new group take along . It ’s clear from the first episode that a rift is developing between George ( whose profession is listed as " Model Maker " with a Masters in Film from UCLA ) and some of the tough , rootsier dude ; George is about foraging and tinkering , while the others are just straight - up badasses . ( At one item , settler Reno criticizes George for riding a motorcycle – clearly a wimpish matter to do when travel four blocks in the blazing Louisiana Lord’s Day . ) When the settlement is attacked in the first installment , George gets Madagascar pepper spray in his eyes and hurt some injuries from a tough fall – he ’s no crybaby , and I mistrust he ’ll demonstrate some electronics or other technical skills that will help the colony down the business line .
Here ’s a preview of the first season – most of the clip are from the first episode .
And here ’s a brief clipping from the first episode , in which the first foreigner come looking for food for thought and water . thing go downhill after this encounter .
The Colonyseason 2 premieres tonight ( July 27 ) on the Discovery Channel , The Colonyat 10 pm . It ’s deserving a flavor for fans of more " real " reality TV – while it is very much staged ( these colonists arenotalone , they ’re just portray that elbow room ) , it ’s a very unlike take on reality TV ; the lack of pecuniary payoff or challenger makes it a show about cooperation , survival , and group kinetics – all pretty brilliant topic for " just " a reality telly show .
Blogger revelation : I received no compensation , endowment , or other boost or rewards for this brushup ; just learn the first episode and liked it .
