He was never seen or heard from again.Devin had stuffed his bed with sheets and pillows to make it appear like he was still there. He then packed a bag with several pairs of pants and wore a heavy jacket.His family didn’t immediately call police because it wasn’t like Devin to run away, his mother, Heather Simmons-Bond tells PEOPLE.But Devin never came back home.“It’s confusing: There’s just a number of details [and] things that Devin did prior to leaving that don’t make sense in context to one another,” Rutherford County Sheriff Office’s Detective Will Pinson tells PEOPLE of the case.While things appeared outwardly normal, Simmons-Bond says she later learned that Devin and his girlfriend had broken up the day before he went missing. According to Pinson, Devin’s cell phone location shows it was possible Devin was that teen, but this hasn’t been confirmed. A few hours later, at about 5 a.m. Devin’s cell phone pinged for the last time.Simmons-Bond says because Devin ran away, people have not treated his case with enough urgency.“I feel like he’s missing, I don’t like the word runaway,” she says. “I think people have a prejudice against runaways and yes, he walked away, but we don’t know what happened after that.”She continues: “At the very least we want to know that he’s okay and that he is safe, and we deserve to know that. … That’s all we want to know is that he’s safe.”Devin is 6 feet tall, weighing 160 lbs. with brown hair and brown eyes.
