It looks like somebody photoshopped the Canadian prairie inside the red gasses of Jupiter , but this is an actual picture , unswayed , of Earth . It ’s a “ ledge cloud ” get off up by early - morning light . Photographed from the Trans - Canada highway in Saskatchewan , this shelf swarm was most probable the bleed edge of a storm .
The photo , take on by Jeff Kerr , was theAstronomy Picture of the Dayyesterday . It showcases why the ledge cloud is particularly forbidding — not only does it presage a tempest , but it ’s attached to another bank of cloud above it . So it ’s literally a gigantic wall of cloud lead a cold front . ( Though it ’s not the same as a paries cloud , which trails a tempest system of rules rather than leading it . )
Also , this image show off the awesome beaut of the Saskatchewan prairies and cue me that sometimes Earth is the most alien - looking satellite I know .
